Salmos 129

A Song of degrees.

Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:

O salmo inicia com Israel personificado, falando coletivamente sobre opressões históricas desde seu início como nação (Êxodo 1:11-14). A 'mocidade' pode aludir ao período no Egito ou formação do povo.
Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me.
The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.

Metáfora da lavoura nas costas simboliza sofrimento prolongado, possivelmente sob domínio estrangeiro (Babilônia, Assíria ou Roma). A imagem remete a trabalhos forçados ou humilhação (Isaías 51:23).
The LORD is righteous: he hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.
Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion.

Imprecação contra inimigos de Sião reflete conflitos históricos com nações vizinhas (Edom, Filisteus). Versos como este geram debate ético sobre orações de maldição na Bíblia.
Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, which withereth afore it groweth up:

Erva dos telhados crescia em camadas finas de terra sobre casas, secando rapidamente - imagem de algo frágil e efêmero (Salmo 37:2).
Wherewith the mower filleth not his hand; nor he that bindeth sheaves his bosom.
Neither do they which go by say, The blessing of the LORD be upon you: we bless you in the name of the LORD .

Negar a bênção era incomum na cultura semítica, onde viajantes costumavam abençoar donos de casas (Rute 2:4). A recusa indica ruptura total com os opressores.
