Os coatitas, os gersonitas (4.21), e os meratitas (4.29) eram famílias de levita a quem era atribuídas tarefas especiais no culto do Israel. Para realizar os trabalhos descritos nestecapítulo, um levita devia ter entre trinta e cinqüenta anos de idade. esperava-se deles que cumprissem seus deveres ao detalhe conforme se descreve aqui. Para falar a verdade, a falta de cumprimento nisto significava a morte (4.20). O culto a nosso santo Deus não deve ser tomado ligeiramente.
