The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

A ligação de Jesus com Davi e Abraão reforça promessas messiânicas (Gn 12:3; 2Sm 7:12-16). A expressão 'filho de Davi' era um título messiânico esperado para o libertador de Israel.
So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

As 14 gerações são simbólicas (o número 14 representa Davi em hebraico). Historiadores notam omissões: por exemplo, entre Jorão e Uzias faltam 3 reis (2Cr 21-25), sugerindo uma estrutura artificial para fins teológicos.
