A esta cerimônia anual lhe chamava Dia da Expiação. Neste dia se fazia um sacrifício por todos os pecados da nação israelita. Este era o único dia no que o supremo sacerdote podia entrar no Lugar Muito santo, a parte mais íntima do tabernáculo. Ali pedia a Deus que perdoasse ao povo. O Dia da Expiação servia como um aviso de que os sacrifícios diários, semanais e mensais cobriam só os pecados de uma maneira temporária. Isto apontava para o Jesucristo, o perfeito Redentor, que tiraria os pecados para sempre.
