Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

Os fariseus eram um grupo religioso judeu conhecido por rigorosa observância da Lei (cf. filipenses3:5). A menção de Paulo como fariseu reforça sua autoridade original dentro do judaísmo antes da conversão.
And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers:

A 'promessa' refere-se à ressurreição dos mortos (cf. at24:15), doutrina central dos fariseus. A esperança nas 12 tribos (v.7) simboliza a unidade de Israel, embora historicamente as tribos já estivessem dispersas há séculos.
