1 Samuel 11

1Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

Por estes dias, Israel era muito suscetível às invasões das tribos saqueadoras tais como estes amonitas do leste do rio Jordão. A liderança que exerceu Saul nesta batalha contra esta tribo de guerreiros serve para unir à nação e demonstrou que Saul era um valioso governante militar. O reinado do Saul se viu fortalecido ao salvar à nação da desgraça e ao perdoar a vida dos que o tinham criticado.

13And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.
